OFF GRID/STANDALONE PV SYSTEM

The Stand-alone PV system is a self-directed Photovoltaic system which is normally used in the isolated area. Components like Solar cell, PV controller, Rechargeable Batteries, Inverter which are used to constitute the stand-alone PV system. The functioning of the Inverter is to switch the DC power into an AC power. The Stand-alone system is mostly adaptable for the domestic application like televisions, Refrigerators, PC’s, Coolers, household lamps which are able gain an ac supply through the bridge rectifier. The functioning the Boost converter is to increase the output power by using the device called SMPC. The Battery charging and the discharging converter can be used to control the charging level of the battery. The Power quality on the system can be achieved by using the three different converters as together.

ON GRID PV SYSTEM

Grid connected PV system is well advanced than other PV system and the power obtained from this system can be used effectively. The requirement of power from the grid side and the system side can be fulfilled by achieving the proper protection to the PV installer. The system inverter is one of the important component for the Grid connected PV system. Unlike stand-alone system, the grid connected system requires several parameters like PV modules, inclination of PV array, system location and the inverter which are used to obtain the performance of the Grid connected system technology.

One of the major differences between the gird connected and the stand-alone PV system is storage battery. There is no need of battery requirement for the grid connected PV system because the power obtained from the grid can be directly stored in the array. It can also be considered as one of the disadvantage because the isolation is very weak at the night time so that the PV array can lose their output power capability during that situation. It can be overcome by using the multi functioning inverter. The block diagram for the Grid connected PV system is shown below.

HYBRID SYSTEM

The additional support of the power storage device to the stand-alone system or to the grid connected system is called as Hybrid PV system. The power form the solar cell can be supplied to the system and the batteries can be charged during the day time through which the power can be utilized during the night time. Stand-alone energy system is commonly used term for the Hybrid energy system with the combination of conventional energy source with batteries, controller and the power equipment. The main functions of power conditioning unit and the controller is to keep continuing the grid quality power. So this kind of system is also called as Integrated Renewable Energy System (IRES). This system can use either the grid or the diesel generator for the back-up purpose. The most important job for the controller is to control the contact between the system components and also it supposes to control the power flow in the system which can be able to offer a steady and reliable source of energy.

When compare to single energy system, the size and cost, the solar radiation and the speed of the wind in the hybrid system are highly depending on the location so it is necessary to make an account to the load of the PV system during the designing period. The Schematic block diagram for Hybrid PV system can be shown below.

SOLAR HOT WATER SYSTEM

A solar water heater consists of a collector to collect solar energy and an insulated storage tank to store hot water. The solar energy incident on the absorber panel coated with selected coating transfers the hat to the riser pipes underneath the absorber panel. The water passing through the risers get heated up and are delivered the storage tank. The re- circulation of the same water through absorber panel in the collector raises the temperature to 80 C (Maximum) in a good sunny day. The total system with solar collector, storage tank and pipelines is called solar hot water system.

SOLAR PUMP SYSTEM

A solar photovoltaic (SPV) water pumping system consists of a PV array, a DC/AC surface mounted/ submersible/ floating motor pump set, electronics, if any, interconnect cables and an “On-Off” switch. PV Array is mounted on a suitable structure with a provision of tracking. Electronics could include Maximum Power Point Tracker (MPPT), Inverter and Controls/Protections. Storage batteries will not constitute a part of the SPV Water Pumping System.

Components and parts used in the SPV water pumping system including the PV modules, pumps, metallic structures, cables, junction box, switch, etc. should conform to the international specifications, wherever such specifications are available and applicable

The Solar PV Water Pumping System should provide a minimum of 85 liters of water per watt peak of PV array used per day under average daily solar radiation conditions of 5.5 KWh/sq.mm. on a horizontal surface, from a total head of 10 meters.

For Deep Well Pumps, the water discharge should be a minimum of 28 liters of water per watt peak of PV array capacity used per day from a total head of 30 meters. In case of High Head, Deep Well Pumps, the water discharge should be a minimum of 17 liters of water per watt peak of PV array capacity used per day from a total head of 50 meters.

SOLAR POWERED LIGHTING SYSTEM

In this system, panels are mounted on the lighting structure or connected in the pole. PV panels have a rechargeable battery, providing power to the fluorescent or LED lamp during the entire night. Most of the solar panels automatically sense outdoor light through a light source. Solar Lights are easy to install and virtual maintenance free. Best of all, it won’t

increase the electricity Bill. The system use solar cells which convert sunlight into electricity and the electricity are stored in the batteries for use at night. The Manufacturers most commonly use nickel Cadmium, Lead acid batteries.

Solar lighting system always works well and the most important thing is to consider geographic and site-specific variables when choosing a product. The system regulates the output voltage with Maximum power point tracking and driving with high brightness LED lights. LED lighting offers high efficiency, long operating life and low voltage operation which ideal for solar.

INSTALLATION AND WARRANTY

Clearly of outstanding concerns for the consultant, the main contractor or end user, the Final visual inspection, Pre-commissioning, Commissioning duties are entrusted to duly authorized personnel, often certified by local authorities for specific type of operations.

The people are reckoned among the site people, allotted with the appropriate equipment and measurement instruments which are carefully controlled (outside calibration when needed, program of internal periodical check etc.)

The client is given an Operation and Maintenance Manual, where it will hold all relevant information necessary for a safe and efficient operating of the installation.
The client can call Pepco Engineering Co. for intervention within the warranty period stipulated by the contracts (a defined period from the site hand over) provided the issue prior assessment confirms it is in our scope of work.

An experienced team, equipped with proper tools or/and instruments, conduct the required maintenance, using the already released instructions and the Maintenance Manual.
